For years I had been asked to sing songs made famous by Dusty Springfield. There were comparisons made between my I AM SL record and her most notable record, Dusty In Memphis, produced by Jerry Wexler in 1969. Anyone who loves singers and songs owns that iconic record. Dusty was a great singer, the songs are amazing and the production is just outstanding, timeless, and cool. So I started thinking about who could understand the type of adventure this would be, who knew Dusty’s original record and what I would want to accomplish with my own. I remembered Phil Ramone. So I picked up the phone one day and cold-called him.

“Phil, It’s Shelby, how are you.” I want you to help me make my tribute to Dusty Springfield.”
His baritone voice came on the line and said, “Well yes darling, I believe we can make this happen”.

I told Phil I wanted 3 things.
1. Capitol Studio A
2. Al Schmitt as the engineer
3. I wanted to record to 2-inch tape.

He said “No problem.”

We started in January 2008. Phil gathered a stellar group of musicians, Al ran the board and the tape machine. Phil and I had a menu of songs that we thought would make a fine record in tribute to Dusty. We recorded 2 songs a day for 5 days and the end result was an amazing, laid back, cool, original record, all live takes. I feel like it’s a record Dusty would be proud to have in her own record collection.

This LP has been remastered from the original 2-inch tapes and Acoustic Sounds make the best vinyl in the world. This is the special audiophile version of the record. You can hear every little beautiful part of this recording.
