Revelation Road Deluxe Edition
Produced by Shelby Lynne
Everso Records
Released 2011

Revelation Road was the third release on my record label, Everso. I was living in Rancho Mirage, California far away from any and all music business. I had succumbed to the feeling in my heart that I would live, make music and art in the California desert for the rest of my life. I could see the pain and the losses that had taken me there.

I decided to play all of the instruments myself and work solely with my engineer Grady every day on the production. I really concentrated on making the record with all of my accumulated recording gear, mostly all analog. I would start with a beat either on real drums or a beatbox, then build a record around it, coloring each canvas, enhancing the stories with music and tones as I felt it. We recorded to 2-inch tape, made few edits and just piled it on as I felt it. It took me a while. I was hardheaded and used no click tracks or any pro-tools, I didn’t even own pro-tools then, just held on to the analog dinosaur tape machine process I loved, still love. But it did make things a hell of a lot harder on me and Grady, and I wanted it that way.

I toured exactly as I made the record, just me and a guitar all over Europe and the U.S. The Deluxe Edition includes material from the original 2-inch tapes, re-mixed and mastered, along with my original demos when I was writing the record. Each song has a story, and each composition comes with a process, as I spent a lot of time with each tune choosing instruments depending on how the story felt. I spent a lot of time on these songs striving to make them the best they could be. I dug deep into my past, my childhood and the haunts, bumps in the night, characters in the scene and found some treasures buried in my heart.

Songwriting is a communication for me. I’m not much of a talker unless it’s through a lyric and a great melody. I’LL HOLD YOUR HEAD is one of the most heartfelt songs on this record. My sister and I grew up in Frankville, Alabama and share a deep, southern tale of love and music. She and I witnessed a childhood together that we cherish and lock into with great melancholy and pride. She and her presence were with me as I wrote this tune remembering us little girls riding the roads with our sweet Mama singing with each other. The SIDE BY SIDE part of the record on the end is complete inspiration, wasn’t planned and I swear heaven sent. I can’t sing it without getting choked up because I know through those vibrations Mama is singing with Sissy and me.

I had written TOSS IT ALL ASIDE previously for another record and it just wouldn’t leave me alone. In the gathering of tunes for this record, it called me to finish it and be allowed a space on this record. I have decided that it’s a song about my parents and their fractured, devastating and deathly relationship. I didn’t know at the time why I was writing such a thing.

Revelation Road was a huge move for me as an artist and a songwriter, record producer, and musician. I drove home every night listening to my creation for the day, proud knowing I had done it all by myself. Yes, I could have gone to Nashville or Los Angeles to make this record and it would have been amazing and spectacular. But it wouldn’t have been the same for me. I had to make this record solo not only to prove to myself I could do it but to prove to myself I had nothing to prove.
